My guiding principles…
… are the heart of my practice. Read on to learn more about them and what our work together will look like.
Holistic nutrition is all about a deep understanding of the impact food has on every system in the body, combined with the knowledge that every person is unique. My job is to delve into exactly what that means in your body. It also means looking at more than just the food you eat to consider your goals, lifestyle, preferences, mindset, family dynamic, and more. Considering you as a whole is key to customizing your solution. One approach simply doesn’t fit all.
Holistic
This principle has two meanings. First, the nutrients in food work synergistically in your body. Vitamins and minerals need each other to function properly. In nature, these nutrients usually occur in the right balance. That’s why whole food — not mega doses of supplements — is the way to go.
Second, synergistic refers to the way I interact with clients like you. I don’t issue edicts to “eat this” and “don’t eat that.” Instead, we’ll work together to define your goals and root out what’s working and what isn’t . Then I’ll help you address the “what isn’t” and adopt new behaviors.
Synergistic
This my favorite of the three principles. The primary reason people don’t succeed when they first try to change their diets or lifestyle is that they make radical changes all at once that are impossible to maintain. Well, I don’t believe in extremes.
A plan is only as effective as it is realistic for your life, in your kitchen, with your family. Basically, if you’ve never met a vegetable you’d like to be friends with, I’m not going to expect you to have a kale smoothie for breakfast tomorrow. We’ll start where you are.
Realistic
“Knowing the deeper ‘why’ behind your goals fuels motivation to achieve them.”
“Understanding the effect different foods have ON your body makes the decision about what to put IN your body easier.”
“This should be a MENTORSHIP, not a MARRIAGE.”
So that’s my philosophy as a nutritionist, but what would I actually do with you? (Hint: it doesn’t involve taking away every single thing you like to eat.)
First, we’ll get to know each other — partly through discussion and partly through data collection. We’ll dig into your goals and the reasons behind them. Often knowing the deeper “why” behind your goals fuels motivation to achieve them. The data we’ll gather will focus on your typical day, your current diet, and the struggles that crop up for you. If you have recent lab tests, we’ll look at those, too.
Data is great, but knowledge is power, so I’ll teach you what food does inside your body — how it affects your energy, mood, sleep, digestion; how it supports muscle growth and repair; how it amps up or tamps down your disease risk factors, and more. Just like understanding the “why” behind your goals, understanding the effect food has on your body makes the decision about what to put in your body easier.
This is when the exciting change begins! We’ll decide what to tackle first and break large goals into smaller ones. At each session, we’ll start with a mini evaluation of what went well since our last visit before looking at any stumbling blocks that came up. Focusing on the positive first lets us harness that and apply it to the struggles in order to resolve them. Periodically, we’ll do a larger evaluation to see how we’re tracking against your goals and make adjustments.
All along the way, I’m focused on making the work engaging, attainable, and enjoyable. (Dare I say fun?)
At the end of the day, my goal is for you to develop the skills you need to continue to have success after our work together is done.
That’s nice, but…
