Want a Fresh Start? Do Something Different!

It’s no surprise that the topic of conversation over the last few weeks has been fresh starts, new goals, resolutions. In my last blog, I tossed out a few ideas for small changes you can make this year to get you off on the right foot. And, I admit that I have a list of goals for myself going into 2025.

What about you?

Staying in my wheelhouse, what are your resolutions when it comes to your health?

Maybe they’re the same as last year or the year before –  but this time, you’re finally going to buckle down and accomplish them. Or maybe you gave up before you started because you know how it goes. You come out of the gate strong, but then life gets busy again and who has the time? There might even be a little fear involved.

It’s completely understandable. After all, our habits are so comfortable, like an old sweater. Even though it doesn’t look good on you anymore, even though it’s not serving you well, it’s familiar (and, it’s not really that out of style yet), so you keep it.

We’ve all been there.

Oh well. Can’t be helped. Better luck next year.

Or…?

There’s a business coach that I follow who has an expression I love:

DSD: Do Something Different.

If you want different results, that’s what it takes.

It doesn’t have to be a seismic change. It doesn’t have to be drastic.

Maybe it starts with just one different choice. Maybe it’s a change in the way you show up for yourself by not going for the quick fix. Maybe it’s being ok with ruffling a few feathers at the dinner table occasionally.

Or maybe it’s as simple as a different way of thinking about the thing you’re trying to accomplish.

Let’s take what I do as an example.

When people hear I’m a nutritionist, many of them assume that my goal is to take every yummy thing they love to eat away from them. There are changes they may need or want to make that seem daunting at the outset and they see what I do as restrictive. They’re afraid life will never be the same and all the joy will be sucked out of eating. Forever.

But here’s the thing…. I don’t come at what I do from a place of proscription and restriction.

I come at it from a place of abundance. That’s what nutrition is all about.

I focus on the abundant colors, nutrients, and flavors my clients can eat. I focus on teaching them about functional foods and broadening their palates. I focus on their joy in how much better they feel with each successive change. And I focus on making it realistic for them so it becomes a resolution for life instead of just for a year or less.

So in 2025, my wish for you is that you do something different. Because the power that the right foods have to change your life really can’t be overstated.
