Now is the Time!
As we approach Father’s Day, I’m reminded that my favorite picture of my husband and daughter – no offense to their beautiful faces – is one where they’re not really pictured at all….
Every time I come upon it, I'm stopped in my tracks. How was her hand ever that tiny? I think of how much bigger it is now. Almost as big as his, certainly as big as mine.
How is that possible? Where did the time go?
Veteran parents always tell newbies not to blink, because the time will fly by. I remember hearing that during the early months, thinking “no way -- the days are endless right now!”
Now I’m the veteran, telling the newbies what they'll eventually tell the newbies behind them. Yet I still can’t believe it. Because I’m sure that I took that photo just yesterday. But I’m also sure that our daughter is going into her senior year of college.
How is that possible? Where did the time go?
I know we all feel this – whether we have kids or not. Even if it’s just with respect to our own age, we don’t know how the time went so fast. And that makes us think of things we’ve been meaning to do while time was getting away from us.
In my line of work, people will often tell me they know they really should stop eating processed foods someday; or their doctor told them they should do something about their blood pressure or cholesterol; or how they have no energy and have been meaning to finally clean up their diets. Then there’s almost always a but. But I don’t have time; but I’ve tried before and it didn’t work; but how much of a difference is it really going to make anyway?
I’m here to tell you that you DO have the time (it’s not as much as you think); this time you WILL succeed; and it will ABSOLUTELY make a difference. Best of all, while an overhaul of your eating habits won’t literally stop the clock or slow down time, it could give you more time – more time as a healthy person, more time with the energy to do the things you love, and – most importantly – more time as in greater longevity.
Do you still want to wait?
I have a relatively new client who decided the wait for him was over. We started our work just two months ago with big goals that we broke into smaller, realistic changes. And have those small changes added up! I recently got this text from him while he was out of town, and he gave me permission to share it….
“I’ve been traveling a bit but just wanted to give you some positive news since we’ve been working together. Stepped on the scale today for the first time and I’m down 10 pounds since I last weighed myself, which was months ago! … Also, my acid reflux has drastically reduced with the dietary changes, as well. I’m rarely waking up with it. Thank you so much!”
Do you still want to wait?
I wish my mom and dad hadn’t. My mother didn’t eat junk food or fast food at all, but sweets were her downfall. And she was never really a “fruit and veggie kind of girl,” so there was that. She came out of the generation where, by the time she was 40, diet foods reigned supreme. The mentality was that calories were all that mattered and you could eat “diet” (i.e., sugar-free, artificially sweetened, and non-fat) versions of your favorite foods and all would be well. You’ve gotta love the 1970s when half a grapefruit and a scoop of cottage cheese was considered lunch. No fiber, very little protein, no healthy fat. My mom had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a lot of stress, little sleep, and not much concept of eating for longevity and brain health. We lost her to Alzheimer’s in 2022.
For my dad, it was heart disease and, eventually, cancer. He had indigestion for as long as I can remember and kept a pack of Rolaids in his pocket at all times. (When I was little, I mistook them for Life Savers and snuck one. You only make that mistake once.) He also finished every meal with some sort of antacid. (Remember the Alka Seltzer jingle?) He’d go through brief periods of healthier eating, but always went back to his old ways because the drastic changes he made were impossible to maintain in the long term. And he always meant to start again “soon.”
Don’t you have a great reason to start now – to not wait to improve your health, or increase your energy, or resolve your digestive problems, or feel your best?
I can help. Tell me about the goals you want to reach and I’ll tell you how I can get you there.
Remember, I give a free session to anyone who's interested, so there's nothing to lose. At the very least, you'll know more than when we started. (Click “REPLY TO ME” below or pass this along to that friend or family member you know could use it.)
There’s no time like the present!
P.S., this photo is a close second.
